HOW IT HAPPENED:

DISCOVER

Carl was referred to me by a friend, and at first we just talked on the phone. Most of my work was based on this phone call, alone.

Carl needed a simple packaging design to bring his prototype to market professionally and inexpensively. The package included two stickers or decals and a cardboard header to be attached to a clear bag for display.

His product is the Spit-tune, an accessory for trombone and other horn players to be used in live gigs. He has a wide range of potential customers, some of whom would be playing in orchestras, weddings and clubs.

CREATE

I knew that the design would need to be timeless, catchy and easy to read in a possibly dark setting. I chose a black and white style, somewhat vintage in appearance, and suggested to Carl a few possible suppliers for the printing and materials. The final product is meant to appear as though it is not a "new" product, but that it has always been around.

I created the files using vector graphics in Illustrator CS3. Vector graphics will give Carl optimum flexibility when he goes to use the images again. Vector art is created in a way where it can be enlarged or reduced in size without any fuzziness or graininess.

RELEASE

Within a week, I was able to provide Carl with three different designs from which to choose. I sent him web-preview files quickly through email. Once he had selected one, we met in person, and discussed how the designs would need to be implemented. At that time I provided him with a disk of the selected design in a few different file formats, so that he could file it for future use.

A week later I provided Carl with a prototype of the bag and header, showing how it would appear assembled, and Carl set off to purchase his final raw packaging materials.

Though Carl has already paid me for the delivering the designs, I am still working with him closely to help customize files and information for his selected suppliers and printers. I will continue to do so until the product reaches market, and beyond.
